Born in France to Caribbean parents, Fabienne Kanor is an award-winning writer and filmmaker. She is the author of several films and 10 books, including Humus (2006) and La grande chambre (2024). Awarded the Chevalier des Arts & des Lettres, Kanor’s work addresses race and gender in France, West African migrations to Europe, and the traumatic effects of enslavement on Black people. Her 2022 essay ‘La poétique de la cale’ examines how the experience of the Middle Passage is represented in literature and art. Kanor is associate professor of French and Francophone Studies at Pennsylvania State University.
