স্বামী তথাগতানন্দের জন্ম ১৯২৫। কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে এম এ পাশ করেন। ১৯৪৫ সালে বেলুড়মঠে দীক্ষাগ্রহণ, ১৯৫৫ সালে যোগদান, সন্ন্যাসগ্রহণ ১৯৬৪ সালে। বেলুড় বিদ্যামন্দিরে শিক্ষকতা করেন দীর্ঘ আট বছর। এরপর দেওঘর রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন বিদ্যাপীঠে, মাদ্রাজ মিশনে শিক্ষকতা। পরবর্তীতে বরাহনগর মঠের প্রধান। ১৯৭৭ সালে তাঁকে নিউইয়র্ক বেদান্ত সোসাইটির দায়িত্বভার অর্পণ করা হয়। তদবধি সেখানকার কর্ণধার। রামায়ণ কথা, মহাভারত কথা, শুভচিন্তা, আভাসিত আলো, স্বামীজীর মাতৃভক্তি প্রভৃতি বহু গ্রন্থ রচনা করেছেন। ‘Journey of the Upanishad to the west' গ্রন্থটি উচ্চ-প্রশংসিত।
