Prof. Dr. Nizam was appointed Vice Chancellor of BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT), Dhaka in 2016, but after two years, he expressed his unwillingness to continue. He was appointed pro Vice-Chancellor of National University, Bangladesh in February 2022. Dr. Nizam is a Scout since 1967, and was decorated with Silver Tiger, Bangladesh's highest award, and the Asia-Pacific Regional Scouts' Chairman's Award. Architect Prof. Dr. Nizamuddin Ahmed was born at the Barisal Red Cross Hospital on 18 February 1951. His banker father Hemayetuddin Ahmed and ratnagarva mother Johara Ahmed are first cousins, and hail from Sutiakati of Swarupkathi Upazilla in Pirojpur District. Nizam had early schooling at Comilla's Our Lady of Fatima Convent. He spent a year and a half at the HH Aga Khan Secondary Boys School at Dares Salam, 1965-67 while his father was posted to the Tanzania capital. He did his Secondary School Certificate from Residential Model School, Dhaka, and his Higher Secondary Certificate from Jhenaidah Cadet College, Jessore. He obtained his Bachelor (1979) and Master of Architecture (1984) degrees from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka. He joined the Department of Architecture, BUET as Lecturer 1980. In 1984, while Assistant Professor, he was awarded UK Commonwealth Scholarship, availing which he achieved his PhD (1987) at the University of Sheffield, England. While Associate Professor, he was awarded Commonwealth Fellowship to undertake postgraduate research (1997-98), also at Sheffield U. Appointed professor at BUET in 1997, he was Dean of the Faculty of Architecture & Planning 2001-03 and Head of the Department of Architecture 2006-2008.Architecture Alumni Association of BUET (ArcAAB) was a brainchild of Dr. Nizam, of which he was the founder-convenor 2000-01. He also instituted ArcSA (Architecture Students Association) during his time as Department Head. He was founder Trustee of BUET Alumni Association 2008. His 'Chintito' column in The Daily Star, Dhaka began 1995 and continued till 2022, after which his column was launched as a blog. He edited its sports page 1996-2000, and the monthly page, 'Agenda for Urban Concern' on contemporary urban issues 2000-05.
